My Fall 2010 Television Schedule

I posted all the premiere dates for this fall tv season earlier. Now, I finally have to pick and chose what I'll actually be able to watch. Luckily, I have a DVR so I can watch one thing while recording another, but this season there are a couple timeslots where even that isn't enough!

Monday
8:00pm: Dancing With the Stars vs. Chuck. vs. How I Met Your Mother

Unfortunately, I don't have much say in this one since I'll be covering DWTS for my internship with RealityWanted.com. I'll be watching DWTS live so I can get my recap up ASAP. I'll then be DVR-ing Chuck to watch once that write up is done, leaving HIMYM to be viewed online the next day. It was a tough choice on which show to watch recorded, since I adore Chuck and HIMYM. But after last season's lackluster HIMYM, I'm only hanging around at all because of my hope it'll get better. There's been a lot of hype about the new season - that they're finally moving forward with the mother, getting back to their roots of what made it funny - so I'm hoping this year it's back to the level of the earlier seasons.

9:00pm: Dancing With the Stars vs. Lone Star

Again, I'll be watching DWTS live. I wasn't going to give Lone Star a chance based off it's premise and marketing, but the critics have claimed it the best new show of the season so now I have to give it a shot to win me over.

Tuesday 
8:00pm: No Ordinary Family vs. Glee

The new show I'm most excited for is going up against one of my favorite new shows from last season. However, Glee's back nine episodes never lived up to its first 13. They became overcrowded with songs and secondary characters, while the storylines became less authentic (Sue's crush on Will?!). I'll give Glee another chance by watching it live and recording NOF, but that may change as the season progresses.

Wednesday:
8:00pm: America's Next Top Model vs. Undercovers vs. Better With You

A J.J. Abrahms spy show seems like a no brainer, but the critical buzz has been fizzling as more screeners went out. It seems it's more style than substance. Plus, I'm not sure if I need another spy show with Chuck and now Nikita on my plate. I'll be watching ANTM live with my roomie and giving Undercovers a probationary recording setting. I enjoyed the promos for Better With You, so I'll give that a shot on hulu later in the week.

9:00pm: Modern Family/Cougar Town

No doubt about it, this is one of the funniest hours on television! Cougar Town grew one heck of a show and Modern Family is fresh off it's Best Comedy Emmy win.

Thursday
8:00pm: Big Bang Theory/S*%t My Dad Says vs. Bones vs. The Vampire Diaries

I just got into Bones this summer, and of course that's when they decide to pit it against two of my favorite shows. I love The Vampire Diaries way too much to push it aside, even though it probably is the most embarrassing of my viewing habits (along with ANTM). I'll be watching TVD live (and recapping it for this blog!), recording BBT/SMDS, and catching Bones online later in the week. I would rather watch Bones on TV, but because The Big Bang Theory is rarely available in full online, I'm forced to watch it over Bones.

9:00pm: Nikita vs. The Office

I wasn't planning on watching Nikita, but because it started a couple weeks earlier than the rest of the season I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did! With fantastic performances from Shane West and Maggie Q, it has romance, espionage, fighting, and gunplay - all things I love. The Office has been dwindling these past couple seasons, so I will be watching Nikita live and recording The Office to watch later. It's now long Must See TV. I'm hoping that after Michael Scott leaves, it ends but I'm sure they'll continue for as long as the ratings/advertising money is there.

Friday

As usual, Friday is a wasteland. I'll be watching my recordings or shows online before enjoying my Friday nights.

Sunday 
9:00pm: Family Guy

I'll be watching Family Guy yet again. Not because I still love the show, but because it's the only thing on Sunday nights once Mad Men ends.

It looks like I've got a busy TV schedule ahead of me this season! I'll be recapping DWTS (on RealityWanted.com) and TVD (on this blog). What will you be watching this season?

My Spring 2011 TV Schedule

There are a whole slew of new midseason shows, some of which I've profiled. With all the changes to the TV landscape, I figured I'll lay out just what shows I'll be watching (and therefore probably posting about.)

Mondays

8pm: Chuck (NBC)
While this season hasn't been my favorite, it's still a whole lot of fun to watch. While its ratings have never been stellar, it's become the anchor show on NBC's weak Monday night lineup. Will that be enough for it to get another season renewal? It's still too early to tell...
8pm: How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
This season has been a steady rise over a weak season 5. The hook of Ted telling the story of how he met his wife has me hook, line, and sinker. I'll be watching this show to the bitter end if it comes to that.
9pm: Being Human (SyFy)
I just posted about this in one of my midseason previews. My most anticipated new show! A werewolf, ghost, and werewolf are 20-something roommates. Hijink and drama ensue.


Tuesdays
8pm: Glee (FOX)
This is the most erratic show on television. For every 3 episodes of mediocrity bordering on crap, there's 1 that I love and keeps my watching. If that ratio gets worse, I may just give up on it but for now I'm in for at leas the rest of the season. And with the ratings stronger than ever and a plum post-SuperBowl timeslot, it's going to be on for a while.

Wednesdays

8pm: Live to Dance with Paula Abdul (CBS)
I'm a sucker for dance shows. I'm covering this for RealityWanted.com, so check it out :)
9pm: Modern Family (ABC) 
Still the most hilarious show on television. I'm not a part of the Community fervor, maybe one day when I catch it on DVD, but for now all my comedy love belongs to Modern Family and Cougar Town.
9:30pm: Mr. Sunshine (ABC)
Taking over Cougar Town's spot for a while, I'll be tuning in to see if Matthew Perry is still my favorite Friend.
9:30pm: Cougar Town (ABC)
If you wrote this show off because of the title, or after the first few episodes, please give it another shot! It's hilarious, smart, and has tons of heart while we follow this family of misfit friends.
10pm: Off the Map (ABC)
I'm not much for medical shows anymore (I used to be a huge fan of Grey's and House) but I do love exotic locations. Plus, a friend of mine worked on the show so if it gets picked up for a full season or more, my friend gets to keep his job! So everybody watch :)

Thursdays

8pm: The Vampire Diaries (CW)
I don't think I need to espouse my love for the show anymore.
8pm: The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
This season has been off with the whole Penny/Leonard and Sheldon/Amy, but I'm in til the end of the season, at least.
8pm: Bones (FOX)
Damn you David Boreanez! You're just so charismatic! The chemistry between Booth and Bones reached a major head in the fall finale of The Doctor in the Photo. It was the best episode of the season and I can't wait to see where things go from here between them.
8:30pm: Perfect Couples (NBC)
While the sneak preview episode wasn't great, I'm going to give it another shot just because of the cast. I love Olivia Munn and the It's Always Sunny Waitress finally gets a real role!
9pm: Nikita (CW)
My favorite new show of the season, the action has been nonstop and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.

Sundays

9pm: The Cape (NBC)
While this has been panned by many of the critics who got early screeners, I'm still hopeful. It's supposed to be like a comic book come to life and maybe those critics just didn't get/appreciate that aspect? It's superheroes and Summer Glau, of course I'll be tuning in.

Reminder: Eureka and Alphas Premiere Tonight on Syfy!

I haven't had much time to talk about the new summer TV shows I'm excited about, but the premieres are already here! Eureka returns tonight at 8pm with season 4.5, which will include a guest arc from geek queen Felicia Day. It'll be followed later by the series premiere of Alphas. Don't know what Alphas is all about?

Comic-Con: Friday Wrap Up

Friday was supposed to be my day in Ballroom 20, but I waited until 11am to line for the 2pm Bones panel, which proved to be a huge mistake. Due to the popularity of True Blood, the room closed and the weren't allowing a line to form because no one was leaving the room between panels. The True Blood panel was at 5pm, so pretty everything before it closed off to those fans because of the fanatical passion of those waiting to see Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer. Oh well, a lesson learned. Instead of listening to the panels for Bones, The Joss Whedon Experience, and The Girls Who Kick Butt, I headed to the Scott Pilgrim Experience and Hall H for the movie panels.

The Scott Pilgrim Experience
This was the first year I ventured outside of the convention center to see what the studios had set up in the Gaslamp Quarter. While there was Dexter: Game On and Britt's Garage for The Green Hornet, I only experienced Scott Pilgrim. After being in line and enjoying all the free garlic bread I could handle, were finally let in. I got to custom make a t-shirt, and actually have it fit me! They also had booths set up for people to play the upcoming video game, create flip-books from 7 seconds of anything they wanted to do in front of the Scott Pilgrim backdrop, and get select cast members/creators to sign posters. If you followed along on twitter, you could know who was going to be there. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the cast or the battle of bands performance, but Bryan Lee O'Malley was on hand to talk about the graphic novel and sign copies of the books or posters.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark Panel
I wasn't here for the movie, it was just convenient for me to stay in Hall H and wait for the next panel for Priest, The Other Guys, and The Green Hornet. I'm not much for scary movies and the clips they showed for this were terrifying! Sarah and I literally shrieked during the first teaser. Even though I have no interest to see the film because of my horror flick preferences, it was very interesting to listen to Guillermo Del Toro speak about it and film in general. He saw the original made-for-TV movie as a kid and it was the scariest movie he had ever seen for a very long time. In 1998 he wrote the screenplay about an ancient chimney with an ashpit that has scary creatures from the bottom of the earth inside. They take children to the darkness and replace them with fake stand ins. It's a mix of fairy-tales and horror. He wanted to make a horror film because in American cinema, the horror film has become entangled with comedy and he wanted to make a movie as "serious as an attack of fucking gonorrhea." He doesn't like Postmodern horror films because there's no respect for the material; it feels like the films are saying you're smarter than the material is.

Del Toro is also venturing into Cable TV horror, doing an anthology series that would rely on shock and power, not gore. If The Walking Dead on AMC finds success, it will open the doors for more horror on television. On his list of projects he'd love to work on, he wants to do a serious take on a masked wrestler vs. vampires. He wants to bring in more Mexican legends and do his version of Frankenstein, he just needs to find the time do everything he would like. He confirmed that he is developing a twisted, stop-motion version of the original story of Pinocchio, not the Disney version. He is working with Disney on a new Haunted Mansion movie. It would be a giant love letter to the ride, since he's been in love with the experience since he went on it for the first time when he was 4. Hopefully it can wash the Eddie Murphy film from our brains.

The Oscars have finally arrived! They were delayed this year because of the Winter Olympics, and I'm so glad they've finally arrived. While the extra weeks of campaigning have helped the awareness of most titles, it has actually hurt The Hurt Locker's chances.

Fall TV: The Complete 2011 Premiere Schedule

This season, the premieres are spread out over the entire month of September and even in to October and November. I feel like the networks learned from the mistakes of last year, where all the shows seemed to premiere within a two week window. With such a short window, it set up a lot of the shows for failure. Viewers had to make their television choices early and if they picked wrong, they had already missed an episode or two of the other new shows and didn't both to catch up.

Comic-Con has arrived!

Today is the first day of Comic-Con, with preview night. The lucky few who scored tickets will get to watch sneak peeks of upcoming television shows, movies, and any other comic-book related things. While I'll be a Comic-Con all weekend, I missed out on the preview night ticket. I'm sure there will be lots of updates on twitter and a slew of entertainment blogs to make up for it though!

Below is my dream schedule. I doubt I'll be able to get in to all these panels, but hopefully I can get in to the majority of them. I'll be blogging and tweeting while in San Diego, so stay tuned here and to @kristal_bailey for updates!

Thursday, July 22
11am - TRON Legacy (Hall H). Expecting a lot of sneak footage in 3D!
3:30pm - Entertainment Weekly: The Visionaries (Hall H). Panel with geek gods J.J. Abrams and Joss Whedon.
6pm - Universal: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Hall H). This is my most anticipated film left in summer! They're also having the Scott Pilgrim Experience all weekend, where select cast and crew will be signing t-shirts.

Friday, July 23
11:30am - Caprica (Ballroom 20). This smart Syfy show is returning in January 2011 and they'll be premiering the trailer along with other new information.
12:45pm - The Big Bang Theory (Ballroom 20). Sheldon. Enough said.
2pm - Bones (Ballroom 20). With filming starting this week, there won't be much new footage, but there will hopefully be some good scoops on what's going on next season and just how everyone reunites after their years abroad.
3pm - The Joss Whedon Experience (Ballroom 20).
4pm - Entertainment Weekly: Girls Who Kick Ass: A New Generation of Heroines (Ballroom 20). Television is the medium of strong female characters!
6:30pm TV Guide Magazine: The 2010 Hot List (Ballroom 20). Chuck's Zachery Levi will be there, and that's all I need to know.

Saturday, July 24 
This is the hardest day for me. Saturday is always packed with the best panels, but this year it's like Sophie's Choice! Do I go to the Chuck panel and miss out on the WB Green Lantern/Harry Potter presentation? Do I check out the new show No Ordinary Family or a surprise favorite of mine The Vampire Diaries? And if I do see TVD, would I be able to make it into Hall H in time to see the Marvel presentation? My life is so hard! (ha!) Well, below are a bunch of panels I'd like to see. In reality, I'll probably only make it to half, if even that.

2:45pm - X: Sons of Anarchy and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Ballroom 20).

Also, while all this is going on, there is so much going on the main floor with all the booths and free swag. It's going to be a busy four days, but I'm so ready!

I really hope UP is nominated for Best Picture this year. With 10 nominations up for grabs, it deserves it.

Tonight are the Golden Globes, the most fun of the award shows. I'm looking forward to Ricky Gervais's hosting skills, he's always pretty quick-witted and hilarious. He veers towards the "almost-too-awkward-to-be-funny" humor, but most of the time it toes the line just right. Below are my Golden Globe predictions in bold.

"Up in the Air" may have the most nominations, but I don't think it's going to win the most. I think "Inglorious Basterds" could take the most home - Best Screenplay, Best Supporting, and I even think it has a shot at Best Picture. It's just such a well done movie, and impressive that it seamlessly weaves through 3 languages. Who do you guys think will be taking home the awards?
