Broadway's Not Just for Gays Anymore!
I missed the Tony Awards last night thanks to a long drive to Las Vegas, but all of twitter was a buzz over the fantastic opening number and hosting duties by Neil Patrick Harris. Seriously, can he just host the Oscars already?
To open the award show, he sang how theater is not just for gays and liberals anymore, it's for red states and blue states, businessmen and their wives, and just about everyone under the sun. Check out the video after the break and let me know your favorite part in the comments.

Watch "Earano" by Oscar Winner Luke Matheny
TVWeek has a great article up about the newest talent on the block: Live Action Short Film Oscar Winner Luke Matheny.
While he used to work at TVWeek, he eventually left his editorial assistant position to start making movies. His graduate thesis film "God of Love" won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film and can be purchased on iTunes. Can't spare the money? You can watch his short film from his sophomore year, EARANO. A play on the familiar tale of Cyrano de Bergerac, it gives a hint at his talent that's still finding a voice.

The Best Part of the Oscars: Autotune
Well, the "young and hip" Oscars sure were something. James Franco seemed high or uninterested most of the time, Anne Hathaway tried to make up for it by being extra perky, and the winners were pretty predictable.
Since you've read my blog, I'm sure you can guess what my favorite part of the ceremony was. Autotune the Oscars!
The Harry Potter and Twilight segments are my favorite.

One week til the Oscars!
I can't believe the Oscars are only a week away. Where does the time go?
James Franco and Anne Hathaway have an uphill battle, trying to inject the awards with some youth and humor. Based off the promotional materials, I think they're on the right track. Watch their commercial:
James Franco also got some advice from comedy movie extraordinaire Judd Apatow:
This could pay off big or fail miserably. I can't wait to see the award show!

My Golden Globe Predictions (Part 1)
This Sunday are the Golden Globes and while there have been a lot of awards given out from critics all over the nation, the Golden Globes are the biggest profile awards before the Oscars. While they aren't exactly predictors of what will win the Golden Statuette come February, it's still fun to predict and theorize. Below my predictions on who will win are in Underlined Italics.
BEST MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA
a. BLACK SWAN
b. THE FIGHTER
c. INCEPTION
d. THE KING’S SPEECH
e. THE SOCIAL NETWORK
With THE SOCIAL NETWORK picking up award after award, I really think it will come out victorious for the Golden Globes and ultimately, the Oscar. Although, given that this is the Hollywood Foreign Press that votes for the winners, I could see the crowd pleaser, England centered THE KING'S SPEECH edging it out.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE -DRAMA
a. HALLE BERRY, FRANKIE AND ALICE
b. NICOLE KIDMAN, RABBIT HOLE
c. JENNIFER LAWRENCE, WINTER’S BONE
d. NATALIE PORTMAN, BLACK SWAN
e. MICHELLE WILLIAMS, BLUE VALENTINE
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA
a. JESSE EISENBERG, THE SOCIAL NETWORK
b. COLIN FIRTH, THE KING’S SPEECH
c. JAMES FRANCO, 127 HOURS
d. RYAN GOSLING, BLUE VALENTINE
e. MARK WAHLBERG, THE FIGHTER
BEST MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL
a. ALICE IN WONDERLAND
b. BURLESQUE
c. THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
d. RED
e. THE TOURIST
I really don't know how most of these movies were nominated. The HFPA strikes again! BURLESQUE, THE TOURIST, and ALICE IN WONDERLAND were all panned by critics. And while I enjoyed RED, I definitely don't think it should be a part of any award discussion. I think the winner here is obvious.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR
MUSICAL
a. ANNETTE BENING, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
b. ANNE HATHAWAY, LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS
c. ANGELINA JOLIE, THE TOURIST
d. JULIANNE MOORE, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
e. EMMA STONE, EASY A
I'm glad to see Emma Stone and EASY A getting recognized, but again I think THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT is the only true award contender in this category. If the two leads end up splitting the vote, I could see Angelina Jolie grabbing a surprise win. She's an international star and the HFPA did love THE TOURIST.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY
OR MUSICAL
a. JOHNNY DEPP, ALICE IN WONDERLAND
b. JOHNNY DEPP, THE TOURIST
c. PAUL GIAMATTI, BARNEY’S VERSION
d. JAKE GYLLENHAAL, LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS
e. KEVIN SPACEY, CASINO JACK
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
a. DESPICABLE ME
b. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON
c. THE ILLUSIONIST
d. TANGLED
e. TOY STORY 3
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
a. BIUTIFUL (MEXICO/SPAIN)
b. THE CONCERT (FRANCE)
c. THE EDGE (RUSSIA)
d. I AM LOVE (ITALY)
e. IN A BETTER WORLD (DENMARK)
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A
MOTION PICTURE
a. AMY ADAMS, THE FIGHTER
b. HELENA BONHAM CARTER, THE KING’S SPEECH
c. MILA KUNIS, BLACK SWAN
d. MELISSA LEO, THE FIGHTER
e. JACKI WEAVER, ANIMAL KINGDOM
I've only seen BLACK SWAN of the films these ladies are nominated for, but awards love when an actress breaks out and goes against type.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A
MOTION PICTURE
a. CHRISTIAN BALE, THE FIGHTER
b. MICHAEL DOUGLAS, WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS
c. ANDREW GARFIELD, THE SOCIAL NETWORK
d. JEREMY RENNER, THE TOWN
e. GEOFFREY RUSH, THE KING’S SPEECH
BEST DIRECTOR - MOTION PICTURE
a. DARREN ARONOFSKY, BLACK SWAN
b. DAVID FINCHER, THE SOCIAL NETWORK
c. TOM HOOPER, THE KING’S SPEECH
d. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, INCEPTION
e. DAVID O. RUSSELL, THE FIGHTER
This is a tough one because I think BLACK SWAN, THE SOCIAL NETWORK, and THE KING'S SPEECH are all strong contenders for the major awards. Which is why I think they'll end up splitting them instead of one film sweeping the major categories. TSN will take Best Picture, BLACK SWAN will get Best Director, and Aaron Sorkin will get Best Screenplay.
BEST SCREENPLAY - MOTION PICTURE
a. DANNY BOYLE, 127 HOURS
SIMON BEAUFOY
b. LISA CHOLODENKO, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
STUART BLUMBERG
c. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, INCEPTION
d. DAVID SEIDLER, THE KING’S SPEECH
e. AARON SORKIN, THE SOCIAL NETWORK
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE - MOTION PICTURE
a. ALEXANDRE DESPLAT, THE KING’S SPEECH
b. DANNY ELFMAN, ALICE IN WONDERLAND
c. A.R. RAHMAN, 127 HOURS
d. TRENT REZNOR,THE SOCIAL NETWORK
ATTICUS ROSS
e. HANS ZIMMER, INCEPTION
BEST ORIGINAL SONG - MOTION PICTURE
a. “BOUND TO YOU” — BURLESQUE
Music by: Samuel Dixon
Lyrics by: Christina Aguilera, Sia Furler
b. “COMING HOME” — COUNTRY STRONG
Music & Lyrics by: Bob DiPiero, Tom Douglas, Hillary Lindsey, Troy Verges
c. “I SEE THE LIGHT” — TANGLED
Music by: Alan Menken
Lyrics by: Glenn Slater
d. “THERE’S A PLACE FOR US” — CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE
VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER
Music & Lyrics by: Carrie Underwood, David Hodges, Hillary Lindsey
e. “YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE LAST OF ME” — BURLESQUE
Music & Lyrics by: Diane Warren
This may be wishful thinking on my part, but TANGLED was the best non-Pixar Disney flick in a while and deserves to be recognized. While I think TOY STORY 3 has Best Animated on lock, this song captured a beautiful moment in the film.

Golden Globe Nominees...
Today's Golden Globe Nominations had even more surprises and questionable choices than usual! While I still love Glee, I recognize that it is no longer the quality show it was when it started. Does it really merit the most nominations of ANY show on television? What happened to all the LOST love from previous years? The last season had it's cons, but it still delivered a quality hour of television week in and week out. Plus, performances by Matthew Fox and Terry O'Quinn were top notch!
As for the films, the drama categories are all pretty by the book. However, the comedy/musical portion is just laughable. According to @JoBlo, the average Rotten Tomatoes score for the 5 nominees is 58%. While I don't think a RT score is the end all, be all of film criticism, it is indicative of the quality in this category. I enjoyed RED, but definitely never considered as an award contender, or even in top half of the movies I saw this year. And to include the box office/critical disappointments that are The Tourist and Burlesque? Really?! I can understand the song nominations for Burlesque, but for the film itself. The Tourist garnered best acting nods as well, giving it 3 more nominations than it deserves.
Oh well, the Golden Globes are not to be taken too seriously. They have some influence/indication on Oscar nominations, but they hardly effect The Emmys at all thanks to the odd deadline times for this award show. The Golden Globes judge off the spring and fall seasons in a year, meaning it's very disjointed when compared to The Emmy nominees.
The full list of nominees are below. I'll be posting my predictions on who will be taking home the trophy closer to the air date. The Golden Globes will air on

2010 Emmy's: Jimmy Fallon's Born to Run Opener
It's a little late, but NBC finally put up the full opening number with the Glee cast, Kate Gosselin, Nina Dobrev, and Tina Fey. The short segment with Betty White and Jon Hamm is among the best seconds of television this year! The opener was the best part of the show, so if you haven't had a chance to see it yet, now's your chance!

2010 Emmy's: Jimmy Fallon's Musical Tribute
While not every song that Jimmy Fallon performed was a success, the tribute to the top three shows that ended their runs this season was my favorite. Doing impressions of Elton John, Billy Joel Armstrong, and Boyz II Men he said goodbye to Law & Order, Lost, and 24. Watch the number below:

2010 Emmy Winners
What a refreshing show! This year there were many upsets and happy surprises. Jimmy Fallon did a stand up job of hosting, peppering in a good amount of humor and musical numbers. If you didn't catch the show, the list of winners is below.
I was most surprised by Juliana Marguiles NOT winning for Best Lead Actress in a Drama. The Emmys have loved her previously and all of the critics had predicted her win. And for it to go to Kyra Sedwick? If you're not going to give it to Juliana, I feel it should have gone to Connie Britton for her amazing work on Friday Night Lights.
I was also very happy to see Jim Parsons finally be recognized for his work as Sheldon. He is what makes that show work and it is a really hard role to play.
Beside the awards, there were plenty of musical numbers and skits. My favorite skit was with Modern Family and George Clooney. Luckily, it's already online!

2010 Emmy Predictions: Drama Categories
Tomorrow is the Emmy's! And while I don't think they get the winners right nearly as often as The Oscars and The Television Critics Association Awards, they do pack a lot of clout when it comes to public perception.
This could be the year that many Emmy favorites and repeat winners will be unseated. With so many new shows and actors in the running, it is almost anyone's game! I'm hoping the Emmy's will reward talent over big names like Tony Shaloub and Julianna Marguiles. They are all very talented, but it's time to get some fresh blood in the mix!
Best Drama Series
Lost
Breaking Bad
Dexter
Mad Men
True Blood
The Good Wife
True Blood finally gets some award recognition! With Lost and True Blood in contention, my genre loving heart is content. I'm glad some fantasy/sci-fi shows are getting finally get recognized for their accomplishments instead of instantly being regulated to second class work. If only they would have recognized so many other shows that were just as qualified (Buffy, Battlestar Galactica, etc.)
While Mad Men has won for the previous two years, Dexter just wrapped it's best season yet. With critical buzz and fan appeal, this could be their year. Also, with the John Lithgow a strong contender to win, Dexter buzz has been at a fever pitch this awards season. While I love True Blood, I just don't think it will take the category. It really is just an honor that they're nominated. LOST also has a strong chance since it has yet to win the big award, despite the mass appeal and it's lasting effects on scripted broadcast television. With this nomination for its last year, it could win as a statement to it strong work for the past six seasons, similar to Lord of the Rings' Best Picture win at the Oscars in 2004.
But in the end, I say that Mad Men is still going to take it home. While I would love for the Emmy's to shake things up, this is one where I think the incumbent is still the champion. If Mad Men doesn't take it home, Dexter would be the front runner.
Outstanding Actress in a Drama
Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
Mariska Hargitay (Special Victims Unit)
Glenn Close (Damages)
Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)
January Jones (Mad Men)
Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)
This is a tough category to pick a clear winner. There are the award veterans of Julianna Margulies and Glenn Close, along with popular new nominees. However, with a strong performance on a series centered entirely around her character, Juliana Marguiles will take the statue home. I wish Connie Britton would win, but while Friday Night Lights is a critical darling, no one is watching.
Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series
Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights)
Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
Hugh Laurie (House M.D.)
Michael C. Hall (Dexter)
Matthew Fox (Lost)
Sad to say it, but you can pretty much count Hugh Laurie, Matthew Fox, and Kyle Chandler out of this fight. Again, it was such a pleasant surprise that Kyle Chandler was even nominated. Jon Hamm and Bryan Cranston are strong contenders, with fantastic AMC shows centered around their performance, but Dexter had such a great season that this is his year. While having its strongest season yet, Michael C. Hall upped his performance to go toe-to-toe with John Lithgow's disturbing performance as the Trinity Killer. And I hate to think of it this way, but his recent battle with cancer probably garnered him a few sympathy votes.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama
John Slattery (Mad Men)
Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)
Martin Short (Damages)
Terry O’ Quinn (Lost)
Michael Emerson (Lost)
Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age)
I fear that the two LOST nominees will end up splitting the vote, which would be a shame since this was Terry O' Quinn's finest season. He did a fantastic job of playing both roles of The Man in Black and alt-verse Locke. I don't watch Damages and Breaking Bad (I'll be fixing that eventually, I swear), but have heard strong buzz about both Martin Short and Aaron Paul. In the end, I think the Emmy will go to the more recognizable name, Martin Short, since that's how things usually turn out.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama
Sharon Gless (Burn Notice)
Christine Baranski (The Good Wife)
Christina Hendricks (Mad Men)
Rose Byrne (Damages)
Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife)
Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)
My biggest girl crush at the moment is Christina Hendricks. She's got such a beautiful face, an amazing body that is making curves sexy again, and is a solid actress to boot. However, I don't think she'll be winning tomorrow. It's hard to predict this one since the double nominations for The Good Wife and Mad Men may split votes, but buzz seems to be in Christine Baranski's favor. As The TV Addict said, "the amount of levity and romance she brought to her scenes with special guest star Gary Cole, turn[ed] what very easily could have been a one-note character into one character to remember."

Emmy Voters Love Glee
Glee, the freshman show that took the pop culture world by storm, has the Academy wrapped around its finger. While the first 13 episodes were solid and are completely worthy of the recognition, the majority of the back 9 fell so hard and so fast that I don't think it deserves NINETEEN nominations.
While nominated for lesser known categories like Art Direction, Hairstyling, Costumes, Make Up, and Casting, it got the big ticket nods as well.
Matthew Morrison was nominated for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, against Alec Baldwin, Larry David, Tony Shalhoub, Jim Parsons and Steve Carell. Last year was supposed to be Jim Parson's year for The Big Bang Theory, but it went to Alec Baldwin again. I just don't think Matthew stands a chance against such comedy staples. They've had this category on lock and will continue to dominate, at least until Alec Baldwin retires in 2012.
Another major recognition is Lea Michele for Best Lead Actress. Lea's competition is nearly all previous winners - Julia Louise Dreyfus, Toni Colette, and Tina Fey. There's also another comedy favorite in the mix - Amy Poehler. They're all at an advantage since their shows are full comedies, unlike Glee which is a musical dramedy. Lea is the long shot. I think the statue will go to either newcomer Amy Poehler who is the focal point of Parks & Recreation, or make Toni Colette a repeat winner.
While I doubt Glee's chances in the major categories, they do have a good shot at winning Best Guest Actor and Best Guest Actress with television favorites like Niel Patrick Harris and Kristen Chenoweth.
