Too Much of a Good Thing: Die Hard

The Die Hard franchise just won't die. Four movies in, only two of them were really great, and we're about to be blasted with another one.

From A.V. Club:

Fox is currently in negotiations with screenwriter Skip Woods to write a new script for the franchise. Woods has already done several tentpole projects for the studio—including X-Men Origins: Wolverine and this summer’s The A-Team—and previously built his reputation for big-bang actioners with Swordfish and Hitman. There’s no word yet on whether Live Free Or Die Hard director Len Wiseman will return, or any details of possible plotlines to discuss, but Willis himself did say in an interview earlier this year that he would like to see John McClane go “worldwide”—as opposed to battling Twitter terrorists, or whatever that last one was about—so maybe this one will find him tossing dudes off the Eiffel Tower or something.

See the list of films this guy previously worked on? I didn't like any of them. Well, it's too early to say for The A-Team, so we'll see on that one. Live Free or Die Hard was a disappointment, why must we continually go back to Die Hard? Stallone just announced that there will never be another Rambo movie, maybe John McClane should go the same route.

Too Much of a Good Thing: Independence Day

Don't get me wrong, I love the movie Independence Day. It's a great action movie that not only has great special effects, but a solid plot line and dialogue. Who can forget this speech?

But, Roland Emmerich has gone on to produce bigger and not as good disaster p*rn movies like The Day After Tomorrow and 2012. While those movies are enjoyable, it's purely for the spectacle and effects, not for the storyline itself.

Now, he's planning on doing not one, but two sequels to Independence Day.
“What we want to do in the next – it’s actually two movies – we want to do a bigger arc…INDEPENDENCE DAY was always like the king who leads his troops into battle against an evil force, and that stays like that…The idea is just to continue the story and actually I don’t know how many years ago this was—twelve, thirteen, fourteen years ago—and just continue where it ended.”
While he said that back in November, it's now coming out that Will Smith has signed on so these will actually get some forward motion.

I'm half-hoping these get stalled again, I'd rather he go back to making that 2012 TV show instead of messing up a great movie with unnecessary sequels.

Too Much of a Good Thing: Enchanted

According to PopCrunch, Disney is gearing up for Enchanted 2. I loved loved loved Enchanted, but I am definitely not looking forward to a sequel if this makes its way to the screen. Disney has a very poor reputation when it comes sequels - sacrificing creativity and storytelling to cash in on the franchise quickly and cheaply. Besides Toy Story 2, can you name a Disney sequel that you enjoyed?

Too Much of a Good Thing: Men in Black

Seems like Men in Black 3 is going to happen.

I loved the first movie, but the 2nd movie was pretty lackluster. And now it's been 7 years since the last one. Do we really need another MiB movie?

The only thing making me think this could actually turn out to be a good movie: Etan Cohen. He's not a name most recognize, but we all have seen his work. He wrote Tropic Thunder, which is a great blending of action and comedy, much like MiB will be. He created great characters and put them in an extraordinary situation. He also wrote Madagascar 2, which I actually really liked. He's proven he's got the comedy chops and can bring original ideas to the screen. Hopefully, he can work his mojo on the MiB franchise! So far they haven't gotten Will Smith and Tommy Lee to fully commit, but if they can get Grade A talent behind the camera, I'm sure they'll get it in front.

Too Much of a Good Thing: Vampires

We all know what Twilight is. We all know what True Blood is. You can't turn around today without seeing something vampire related! And this is just the beginning! This fall The CW rolls out The Vampire Diaries:

This is also a book adaption, and it looks to be very similar to Twilight - human girl moves to a new town, falls for a vampire, how will this work out?!

Then later this year, we have Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant:

Also based on a book, but the book is part of a whole series that follows this circus. Figures they'd focus on the vampire aspect given the times. I think it looks interesting, and it's a nice change that the vampire isn't a hot young thing for once.

I see why studios want to capitalize on the trend, but soon this will burn out and there will be a bunch of projects in various stages of development or distribution that will no longer have an audience.

Now, there may be a lot of content out there on vampires, but I know I'm going to be watching some of it. I grew up on Buffy and Angel, it's pretty much ingrained in me. But I think I'll be reserving my vampire love to True Blood, loving the trash of Twilight, and rewatching the classics (Buffy and Angel) on DVD.

What will you guys be watching?

What vampire content are you in to? What projects are you looking forward to?
