Netflix Watch Instant: The Complete Series of Dollhouse

You missed out on this great show. Don't lie, you know you didn't watch it. I know because no one did. It's ok, I forgive you. Airing in the Friday dead zone, it's totally understandable. But now thanks to Netflix Watch Instant, you can watch this gem of a show that everybody missed.

Dollhouse suffered from taking too long to find it's voice, mainly because of network meddling in yet another great Joss Whedon show. Seriously, you'd think he'd have learned after Firefly, but Eliza Dushku's contract with Fox made it impossible to take this show elsewhere. While at times it was a clunky, flat vehicle for Eliza Dushku, it found it's footing and became an indepth look at what makes a personwho they are, with the recurring theme of what is a soul and if love could really conquer all.

The show could be hit or miss, but when it hit it was the best thing on television that week. Watch a trailer below and then hop over to Netflix and get to marathoning! With only 2 short seasons, it's a fairly quick watch as far as television series go.

Jed Whedon wishes you a Merry Christmas

I'm a huge fan of the Joss Whedon crew, especially Jed Whedon and his wife Mo Tancharoen. You probably don't recognize their names, but if you've seen Dr. Horrible's Sing a Long Blog then you've loved their work. That was their first major writing project and have since done some amazing work on Dollhouse. With Dollhouse over, I can't wait to see what their next project is. Maybe they've moved with Joss to the Marvel Universe?

I was a huge fan of Dollhouse when it was on the air. Despite its rocky start, it ended on such a high that it was quite possibly the best show that was on at that time. I've been keeping track of what the cast is doing, as I do with most of Joss Whedon alums (some of the best writers are currently working on Caprica, are you watching?).

2009 Fall TV Wrap Up

Before the season began, I wrote about which Fall shows I'd be checking out. Well, the Fall TV Season is wrapping up so it's time to check the pulse.

Monday


Monday's have proven to be pretty successful for CBS. How I Met Your Mother is doing well in the ratings and having a pretty good season so far. There have been a few lackluster episodes (like when Barney/Robin break up), but overall it's had some really hilarious moments. I'm interested to see where they go with Robin and the new guy Dan - if he'll be just a one-off character or will become Robin's "frozen waffles" like Marshall predicted. I also started watching The Big Bang Theory this season, since I finally caught up with the last 2 seasons. That show is consistently funny and I'm a sucker for the nerd humor. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that it's by the same guy who created Two and a Half Men. They're just such different shows and appeal to such different demographics.

Tuesday


So You Think You Can Dance has been having a great season! It suffered a bit in the beginning because of the restrictions that baseball put on it, but once that was over it was a return to form and has had some of the best dancing in the show's history. I don't think I want it to have another fall season though. It gets interrupted too much and there really is just too much competition to get it the audience numbers it does in summer.

V only aired four episodes, but from what was there I was really intrigued. It isn't set to return until March though, which could hurt its ratings. It didn't air long enough to gain a dedicated fanbase, so it'll be interesting to see how the ratings are upon its return.

Wednesday


So You Think You Can Dance results shows always pale in comparision to the competition show, which is to be expected in reality TV. But, I still wish the dancers would do original solos on Wednesday nights instead of just redo-ing their solos from the night before. Some of the solos on Wednesdays were the highlights of Season 4.

America's Next Top Model wrapped up its "Shorty" season a couple weeks ago and overall it was pretty lackluster. Nicole won, who was a frontrunner and photo favorite since the beginning. The show has been on long enough that contestants know what to say and what not to say, so it's getting a bit boring. There definitely hasn't been as much drama and catfighting as there used to be.

Glee is wrapping up its fall season this week and I have absolutely loved this show. It has lived up to the potential of the pilot, for me. Great songs, some great lines, and Sue Sylvester. I'm going to countdown my favorite moments sometime soon, so keep an eye out for that.

Modern Family consistently makes me question my declaration that Glee is my favorite show this season. It's always so funny and smart! It has the humor and jokes, but a storyline and heart at its core that push it above other sitcoms like 30 Rock and It's Always Sunny.

Cougar Town was a nice surprise this season as well. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I do. Courtney Cox is doing a great job of being funny in her 'cougardom' and not pathetic or annoying. Busy Phillips is my favorite though, she's been so spot on as that busty bimbo with good intentions.

Eastwick has been cancelled, but I actually liked this show. It didn't take itself too seriously, like other witchy shows have before (aka Charmed's later seasons). It moved at a slow slow pace for somethings, but still kept the show interesting. For example, the girls JUST admitted to being witches last week, even though they've been doing their magic thing on their own for the duration of the show.

Thursday


FlashForward has probably been the biggest disappointment for me. It's pilot was really engrossing, but since then things have moved so slowly. I liked the episode about Bryce and his mystery lady in Japan the best, but it seemed wasted because she won't be on the show much in the future. They should have used that storytelling structure more often with the characters we are supposed to care about. With all the behind-the-scenes problems on this show, hopefully it will improve after its hiatus in March. They can use this production halt to reasses the show's direction and how it'll work under the new showrunner.

The Office hasn't lived up to its past seasons this year. The Wedding was the highlight by far. I think it suffers from being too topical. All the storylines about money, the economy, and Dunder-Miflin's bankruptcy are too serious to produce laughs. Yes, there are some funny moments but overall it's just too uncomfortable. Just look at last week's episode about "Scott's Tots" for proof. In down times like these, sometimes we want TV to serve as escapism and The Office is just hitting too close to home.

Friday


Dollhouse has been cancelled, but its just getting to the level that we expect of Joss shows now. Last night's episodes were the best so far that have aired, and the buzz about the upcoming episodes is growing. This is the Dollhouse that Joss wanted from the beginning but couldn't get Fox on board with.

Overall, this has been the best fall season in years. The mid-season shows also look to be really strong (Chuck! Lost! Human Target, etc), so there's a lot still to look forward to.

Dollhouse Tonight!

Tonight marks the return of the last leg of Dollhouse! I'm excited for the double episodes on Fridays coming up. I'm sad to see it end, but it looks like it's going to go out with bang. Check out the promo for tonight's episodes:

Dollhouse Fairy Tale

Wow, I can't believe this is a fan made video. It looks great! It also really captures the feel of Dollhouse and hints at its broader messages.

Dollhouse: Season 2

This fan-made trailer is great! It really highlights what the show is about - not just sex and action, but fantasy trade and control. I'm so excited for Season 2! It starts this Friday 9/25, 9pm PT/ET on FOX.

2009 Fall TV Preview

The Fall TV Season is gearing up and I'm psyched! This is looking to be one of the strongest seasons in recent memory, with plenty of new shows I want to check out. Not sure how I'm going to fit it all, thank god for DVR and online streaming on sites like Hulu and Fancast! I'll break it down by day of the week and if I miss any of your favorites, let me know in the comments!

Monday
8pm: How I Met Your Mother (CBS). In case you haven't figured it out by now, I'm a big HIMYM fan. Last season was kind of lackluster, but I think that's more because they had to work around the double pregnancies of the leading ladies than the creative well running dry. I hope this next season will be a return to form.

Other notes: I gave up on Heroes long ago, but it's still got a pretty solid fanbase. Hopefully HIMYM can continue to gain viewers this season. Also, I love Chuck, but it's not coming back until March. So sad.

Tuesday
8pm: So You Think You Can Dance (FOX). Also, an obvious pick for me. I'm sad the Top 20 (the good part of the show) doesn't start until Oct. 27, damn you baseball! I'm also interested to see how the changes they've added pan out.

Other notes: I hope the ratings pick up once the Top 20 start, but it has the toughest competition its ever faced now that it's in fall. I hope it can keep up.

Wednesday - my busiest TV day of the week by far.
8pm: America's Next Top Model (The CW). Shorty season! So far this show is proving to be much of the same, despite this season's gimmick. It's also a show that's been on for so long now that the contestants seem to know what's coming, which is cutting down on the drama a bit. There have no breakdowns during the makeovers, or even during the topless shoot. The show's going to have to come up with something new if it's going to make these girl cry.

8pm: So You Think You Can Dance Results (FOX). See above. Love it!

9pm: Glee (FOX). I've been in love with this show since they aired the premiere after American Idol. It's so bubbly and infectious, and I have loved all the musical numbers they've done so far. Each week, my love for this show grows.

9pm: Modern Family (ABC). I saw the pilot at D23 and loved it! I had heard the good buzz before, but didn't pay much attention to since I'm not much of a sitcom person (other than HIMYM). This show won me over within the first 5 minutes of the screening.

9:30pm: Cougar Town (ABC). I'm mainly just checking it out because of Courtney Cox. And, even though the premise sounded dumb at first, the promos have won me over.


10pm: Eastwick (ABC). 3 women find their inner witches to get everything they ever wanted in life and romance. I'm a sucker for the supernatural with some romance thrown in. (Note: Buffy, guilty pleasure Twilight, Charmed, and the list goes on.) That is enough for me to check out this show for at least the first few episodes.

Thursday
8pm: Vampire Diaries (The CW). See Eastwick. Same reasons apply. Plus, Ian Somerhalder.

8pm: FlashForward (ABC). I saw the pilot at D23 and was impressed. This could be the show that fills the Lost void after its final season. Great cast, intriguing premise, and lots of potential.

9pm: The Office (NBC). I'm looking forward to all the Pam/Jim storylines that are coming up this season! As my favorite part of the show, I'm glad they're going to tackle a couple of big life milestones.

9:30pm: Community (NBC). It's the return of Chevy Chase! After his great turn in Chuck last season, I can totally see him succeeded in television. The show looks funny from all the clips and promos they've put out, and it's got a cast full of actors that have proven their comedy chops time and time again. My personal favorite: Ken Jeong.

Friday
9pm: Dollhouse (FOX). After a rocky start in its first season, this show got so incredibily, mind bendingly good. I'm surprised it got picked up for a second season, as I'm sure everyone else was. Joss shows always get better as they have more of their world built up and mythology to draw from. It's going to be a great second season.

and I think I've talked enough about TV. Whew, tired out. Well, what will you guys be watching?

Dollhouse: Season 2

Everyone, myself included, was shocked when Dollhouse was renewed for second season. I'm so glad Fox is allowing this show to grow and develop, even though the audience isn't quite there. Or at least, not there during the live airings. Dollhouse had a much better DVR/online streaming rating than traditional rating. The promotional poster for the new season was just released, check it out:

I love the stark colors and perspective on Eliza Dushku. It feels very '60s to me too. And the tagline "Anyone can happen" sums up the show nicely, while intriguing those that aren't familiar with it.
