Good Deal: 2001: A Space Odysessy on Blu-Ray for $9.99

This classic science fiction is a steal this week, at only $9.99 from Amazon!

Check out the editorial review from Amazon:

When Stanley Kubrick recruited Arthur C. Clarke to collaborate on "the proverbial intelligent science fiction film," it's a safe bet neither the maverick auteur nor the great science fiction writer knew they would virtually redefine the parameters of the cinema experience. A daring experiment in unconventional narrative inspired by Clarke's short story "The Sentinel," 2001 is a visual tone poem (barely 40 minutes of dialogue in a 139-minute film) that charts a phenomenal history of human evolution. From the dawn-of-man discovery of crude but deadly tools in the film's opening sequence to the journey of the spaceship Discovery and metaphysical birth of the "star child" at film's end, Kubrick's vision is meticulous and precise. In keeping with the director's underlying theme of dehumanization by technology, the notorious, seemingly omniscient computer HAL 9000 has more warmth and personality than the human astronauts it supposedly is serving. (The director also leaves the meaning of the black, rectangular alien monoliths open for discussion.) This theme, in part, is what makes 2001 a film like no other, though dated now that its postmillennial space exploration has proven optimistic compared to reality. Still, the film is timelessly provocative in its pioneering exploration of inner- and outer-space consciousness. With spectacular, painstakingly authentic special effects that have stood the test of time, Kubrick's film is nothing less than a cinematic milestone--puzzling, provocative, and perfect. --Jeff Shannon
This is a must own for any sci-fi completist.

The Walking Dead: Season 1 on DVD for $14.99

The critically-acclaimed zombie show is on sale on Amazon so it's the perfect time to buy it and catch up.

Don't know what I'm talking about? Have you been living under a rock?! Well, here's out the official synopsis to job some memory cells.

Waking up in an empty hospital after weeks in a coma, County Sheriff Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) finds himself utterly alone. The world as he knows it is gone, ravaged by a zombie epidemic. The Walking Dead tells the story of the weeks and months that follow after the apocalypse. Based on Robert Kirkman's hugely successful and popular comic book series, AMC's new original series, The Walking Dead, premieres with a 90-minute episode on Halloween night: Oct. 31 at 10/9c. Written and executive produced by three-time Academy® Award-nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile), who also directs the pilot, and executive produced by Gale Anne Hurd (The Terminator, Aliens), the series debuts during AMC Fearfest, the network's annual blockbuster marathon of thriller and horror films.

The Walking Dead is an epic, edge-of-your-seat drama where personal struggles are magnified against a backdrop of moment-to-moment survival. A survivalist story at its core, the series explores how the living are changed by the overwhelming realization that those who survive can be far more dangerous than the mindless walkers roaming the earth. They themselves have become the walking dead.

Shot on location in Atlanta, The Walking Dead is led by a cast that includes Lincoln (Teachers, Love Actually) as Rick Grimes, Jon Bernthal (The Pacific, The Ghost Writer) as Shane Walsh, Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break) as Lori Grimes, Laurie Holden (The Shield, Stephen King's The Mist) as Andrea, Jeffrey DeMunn (Stephen King's The Mist, The Green Mile) as Dale, Steven Yeun (The Big Bang Theory) as Glen, Emma Bell (The Bedford Diaries) as Amy and Chandler Riggs (Get Low) as Carl Grimes.

Joining Darabont and Hurd as executive producers are Kirkman; David Alpert from Circle of Confusion; and Charles "Chic" Eglee (Dexter, The Shield). Jack LoGiudice (Sons of Anarchy, Resurrection Blvd) serves as co-executive producer with Denise Huth (Stephen King's The Mist) as producer. The Walking Dead was written by Darabont, Eglee, LoGiudice, Kirkman, Glen Mazzara and Adam E. Fierro. In addition to Darabont, directors for the series include Michelle MacLaren, Gwyneth Horder Payton, Johan Renck, Ernest Dickerson and Guy Ferland.

Good Deal: The X-MEN Trilogy on Blu-Ray for $7.99 each

UPDATE: Looks like if you didn't act fast enough, this deal is over! The first two films (the far superior films) are back up to full-price, but THE LAST STAND is still discounted a bit.

With X-MEN: FIRST CLASS opening this weekend, it only seems appropriate that you should stock up on its predecessors. You can buy the box set for $32.99, but who really wants to own the third one anyway? And with the deal, it actually ends up cheaper to buy them all seperately.

X-MEN

While SPIDER-MAN gets a lot of credit for bringing in this era of the superhero, X-MEN was first and did it splendidly. I grew up watching the X-Men cartoon and this movie was pitch perfect for me. I loved the casting and the general allegory of mutants as societal outsiders. Plus, it introduced us all to Hugh Jackman and I'm so glad for that!

X2: X-Men United

The superhero film market has become flooded with some quality films since this was released, SPIDER-MAN 2, IRON MAN, and THE DARK KNIGHT, but this remains my favorite of them all. They did everything that made the first one great and just made it better - deeper mythology, bigger bad, and a heck of a love triangle. This is the movie I measure all other superhero films against.

X-MEN 3: THE LAST STAND

Well, this is better than the Wolverine spin-off. It's a strong enough effort that I'll rewatch it when I marathon threw these films this week, but it's definitely the weakest link. Brett Ratner just never captured what made the first two great, but he did a passable job at making an entertaining flick.

Which X-MEN film is your favorite? Are you as excited for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS as I am?

Good Deal: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Trilogy on Blu-Ray/DVD for $13.49 each

Over the weekend, I rewatched all of the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films to brush up before the fourth film comes out on Friday. While I'm sure you don't need to rewatch them to enjoy or even understand the fourth, I had a fun day marathoning through them.

And now Amazon is having a deal where you can buy the Blu-Ray/DVD combo packs for only $13.99 each!

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

By far the best film of the bunch! This is my favorite of Disney's live-action films. Swash-buckling adventure, a whole lot of fun, and the iconic performance by Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow - this is a must-buy!

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST

My main beef with this film is that it's not a complete story. It was fun and had adventure and sword fights and betrayal and love, but it was all so obviously leading to the third that it never feels complete. Sequels are still supposed to be movies in their own right, and that's where this fails.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END

This movie is a mess. It's so weird and tonally different from the first two that you'd never guess they were made at the same time and by the same crew as the second film. I'm only including this one here for the sake of those completists who need all or nothing when it comes to franchises. Just so weird.

Good Deal: The SCREAM Trilogy on Blu-Ray for $9.49 each

When SCRE4M came out last month, I re-watched all the SCREAM films in preparation and it was a blast from the past. The first film is a new-classic horror film, being a commentary on horror film tropes while simultaneously joining the ranks of the films it critiques. The follow ups never live up to how smart it is and sometimes drown in their own desire to be just as creative, but they are still fun to watch in their own right.

You can buy them all on Blu-Ray from Amazon now for only $9.49 each below.

Good Deal: Planet Earth: The Complete BBC Series on Blu-Ray for $49.99

Over the weekend, I watched a few segments from Planet Earth again and I am just always blown away by how amazing it is. An in-depth look at parts of the world that most people will never explore, it shows a fascinating world of wildlife, survival of the fittest, and the power of nature. Amazon has an amazing deal going on right now, where you can buy the entire series on eye-popping Blu-Ray for 50%.

Check out this official description from Amazon:
As of its release in early 2007, Planet Earth is quite simply the greatest nature/wildlife series ever produced. Following the similarly monumental achievement of The Blue Planet: Seas of Life, this astonishing 11-part BBC series is brilliantly narrated by Sir David Attenborough and sensibly organized so that each 50-minute episode covers a specific geographical region and/or wildlife habitat (mountains, caves, deserts, shallow seas, seasonal forests, etc.) until the entire planet has been magnificently represented by the most astonishing sights and sounds you'll ever experience from the comforts of home. The premiere episode, "From Pole to Pole," serves as a primer for things to come, placing the entire series in proper context and giving a general overview of what to expect from each individual episode. Without being overtly political, the series maintains a consistent and subtle emphasis on the urgent need for ongoing conservation, best illustrated by the plight of polar bears whose very behavior is changing (to accommodate life-threatening changes in their fast-melting habitat) in the wake of global warming--a phenomenon that this series appropriately presents as scientific fact. With this harsh reality as subtext, the series proceeds to accentuate the positive, delivering a seemingly endless variety of natural wonders, from the spectacular mating displays of New Guinea's various birds of paradise to a rare encounter with Siberia's nearly-extinct Amur Leopards, of which only 30 remain in the wild.

That's just a hint of the marvels on display. Accompanied by majestic orchestral scores by George Fenton, every episode is packed with images so beautiful or so forcefully impressive (and so perfectly photographed by the BBC's tenacious high-definition camera crews) that you'll be rendered speechless by the splendor of it all. You'll see a seal struggling to out-maneuver a Great White Shark; swimming macaques in the Ganges delta; massive flocks of snow geese numbering in the hundreds of thousands; an awesome night-vision sequence of lions attacking an elephant; the Colugo (or "flying lemur"--not really a lemur!) of the Philippines; a hunting alliance of fish and snakes on Indonesia's magnificent coral reef; the bioluminescent "vampire squid" of the deep oceans... these are just a few of countless highlights, masterfully filmed from every conceivable angle, with frequent use of super-slow-motion and amazing motion-controlled time-lapse cinematography, and narrated by Attenborough with his trademark combination of observational wit and informative authority. The result is a hugely entertaining series that doesn't flinch from the predatory realities of nature (death is a constant presence, without being off-putting). At a time when the multiple threats of global warming should be obvious to all, let's give Sir David the last word, from the closing of Planet Earth's final episode: "We can now destroy or we can cherish--the choice is ours."

Good Deal: HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON Blu-Ray/DVD Pack for $13

Since I have Music Mondays and Linkulous Fridays, I think I'm going to try to have Good Deal Wednesdays. I've already been posting Good Deals, but not on a regular basis. So here begins Good Deal Wednesdays!

One of my favorite movies from last year, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, is now available for only $13 on Blu-Ray/DVD. It made it on my Top 15 Movies of 2010 List, so I definitely think it's worth the money.

It's a great coming of age story about believing in yourself and going your own way, filled with laughs. I saw it in 3D, and while it was a great experience, watching it on Blu-Ray was just as fun to watch. The animation is beautiful no matter what dimension you watch it in.

You can buy it from Amazon below:

Good Deal: SERENITY Blu-Ray only $10.49

My regular readers know just how big a Joss Whedon fan I am. So for me to say SERENITY is one of his most under-rated projects, that means you have to check it out. Even if you haven't seen Firefly, this movie can stand alone. I had many friends who saw the movie and loved it so much that they went back and checked out the series.

And now, for a limited time, the Blu-Ray is only $10.49 on Amazon. This is a MUST BUY situation. Head over to Amazon by clicking below:
