TV Upfronts: "Smash" takes on "Glee"
With the success of Glee, I'm surprised more upcoming shows don't feature musical numbers! There is one show that will directly take on the musical genre, and it's got some great talent behind it.
Smash stars Debra Messing (Will & Grace), Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean), and "introduces" Kat McPhee (American Idol contestant). Not only does it have some major talent on screen, it's also being produced by Steven Spielberg.
Catch the trailer and after the break.
This feels more like Fame than Glee, but you bet this show wouldn't exist had Glee not become a smash hit. Before Glee, the musical television genre was a joke having the likes of Rock Cops and Viva Laughlin.
Smash will air Monday nights after The Voice on NBC starting midseason. This could change if their fall premiering shows flop and they need to fill some holes, but it makes a great combination with the musical reality show.
