I've seen a handful of movies over the past week that I haven't had the time to talk about here. Last weekend was a bit hectic between buying my first car (post coming soon on that) and filing my own taxes for the first time. So, let's play a bit of catch up!
Hot Tub Time Machine
The best comedy since the Hangover! It's definitely the type of movie that you'll know if you'll like it solely based on the title. You know exactly what you're signing up for and will enjoy every bit of it. John Cusack plays the perfect stuck-in-the-80s schmuck, probably because he just belongs in the 80s with his best movies like Say Anything..., One Crazy Summer, Better Off Dead..., etc.
I'm surprised it didn't do better in the box office, but I guess the timing just wasn't right. For a college aged, the movie came out right in the midst of the busiest time of year - midterms/finals right before spring break, and March Madness. Those real life concerns must have gotten in the way of seeing a great comedy movie.
You still have time to check this out, but if you miss it in theatres it should definitely be seen on DVD. It would make a great drinking game, stay-in-with-friends flick.
How to Train Your Dragon (in 3D)
This may be my favorite DreamWorks animated film yet. The animation was beautiful, plus Toothless was adorable! A great coming of age story about believing in yourself and going your own way. I saw it in 3D, but I'm sure it would have just as beautiful in 2D animation. I highly recommend seeing this. It's not just for kids, it's enjoyable for all ages.
She's Out of My League
I got roped into seeing this one. I had seen all the trailers and was left pretty indifferent for it. I'm just tired of the double standard that an undesirable guy can get the hot chick, while you never see a movie of the undesirable girl landing the stud. See: Knocked Up, She's Out of My League, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, etc.
However, once I was able to push down my feminist mindset, the movie did have it's funny moments. I particularly enjoyed the Disney humor. If you're at all interested in this film, check it out as a rental or a bargain matinee.
This isn't the season for top notch movies. That comes in May, with Iron Man 2, Prince of Persia, and all the other summer blockbuster pop corn movies. However, first comes KICK-ASS. I'll be sure to post my thoughts on that after I see it opening weekend.
