Scott Pilgrim Q&A at the New Beverly

A few weeks ago, I got the chance to see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World again, this time at a midnight screening at the New Beverly complete with a Q&A with Edgar Wright and several of the cast members. Scott Pilgrim was one of my favorite movies from this year, and it stands as the only film I’ve seen twice in theaters in 2010. It really needed it the most after all, with a paltry box office of $31.5 million.

Enough has been said on the film already, so I’ll just dive right in to the question & answer portion.

How do you [Brian Lee O’Malley, creator of the graphic novels] feel about the differences between the books and the movies?
I did the books all solo while Edgar worked on his own thing. There wasn’t much collaboration between us two to get the movies to be exact adapations, we wanted there to be differences to make sure it fit for their own mediums. Plus, it's a long production process and I understand that the movie can't include everything.

What’s everyone’s favorite video game?
Edgar Wright: Rampage
Michael Cera: Contra
Mae:  Mist
Anna Kendrick: Shenobi
Satya Bhabha & Mark Webber: Mega man

This role was very physical, how did you feel preparing for it?
Cera: I trained for 2 months, in fighting and bass. It was great because I got to know everyone before we even started shooting. Because of the exercise, I’ve never felt more confident. I was pretty much a stud by the end of it.

What was your most entertaining movie going experience?
Edgar Wright: My most entertaining movie experience was when I saw Hostel 2. It was a midday, midweek showing so there were maybe only 5 people in the theater. Then, during the cannibal scene, some guy came in just then and sat next to him. During one of the goriest moments, he just leaned over to me and said “beautiful.”

The soundtrack was fantastic and one of the many highlights of the film, how did you go about putting that together?
Edgar Wright: The soundtrack came together really came together because of my friend Nigel. He put together the score, and he’s been produced by Paul McCartney and some other big names. The idea was to have a different artist do their song as if they were a different artist, like Heck channeled their garage band roots, and Metric did a parody of themselves. We currently have three soundtracks out – one for the game, the score, and then the traditional soundtrack. We have enough songs to fill a fourth, and we want to distribute it, but it’ll depend on money down the road.

How familiar were you with the material before landing your roles in the film?
Mae: I was the only one who had read the books. I loved it before auditioning for the role.

When you were casting for this role, how did it all shake out? Did you have people in mind from the beginning, or did you leave it open depending on auditions?
Edgar Wright: I had a lot of people in mind from the start. Michael Cera was at the top of my list from near the beginning. I was lucky and got most of my first choices. Casting spanned at least a year; it was a long process. One of the many special features on the Blu-Ray is the casting tapes. That’s a fun little feature.

This movie obviously draws a lot from video games, were there any specifically that you pulled from when writing the story/filming the movie?
Brian: I never had N64, so I don’t know the games well enough to have based anything off them specifically.
Edgar Wright: The fights were inspired and referenced a lot of great video games. I looked to Fuly coolly, Beck, Akira, Naruto video games, and especially Marvel vs. Capcom. For the twins battle specifically, the creatures were double dragons because there are two of them. That bit was an homage to Scott Wolf and his fabulous work in Double Dragons. [The Double Dragons trailer played before the movie, along with a few video game commercials.]

Are there any character notes that didn’t get explored in the movie, but that still influence who they are?
Edgar Wright: Julie's secret fact is that she had a crush on Scott during college, that’s why she treats him the way she does. Roxy is half ninja, but insecure and angry about not being a whole ninja

What did Scott order off amazon?
Edgar: I don’t actually know. Maybe it was a Wang Chung CD? Hott Fuzz DVD?

What is everyone currently working on now?
Brian: I’m glad to be going back to Toronto and being a hermit again. I’m not sure what I’ll do next.
Stephan stills is directing.
Envy is in The United States of Tara and a film called Rampart.
Mae is focusing on her music and is also starring in the NBC show Parenthood.

Other odds and ends mentioned throughout the night:

  • Roxy’s whip wasn’t in the graphic novel. It was designed specifically for the movie.
  • Edgar Write would want to make The Action Doctor. The first thing Chris Evans did for the project was all the posters.
  • Check out the plot keywords on IMDB.com. It makes it sound like an NC-17 flick with one of them being "Death by Orgasm."
  • Brian enjoyed the movie and was himself surprised by the ending. The last book was done after the movie was already nearly complete so there wasn’t much discussion between the two about where things would end up.
  • Another special feature that will be on the Blu-Ray is a compilation of all the TV-safe voice over edits they recorded. They had to change any instance of them saying “god” or “ass” or anything like that. The montage was hilarious, with constant references to people being such “bad owls.”

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Blu-Ray is out now and would make a PERFECT holiday gift for your friends or family. More people need to see this film.

Back to the Future is Back!

The 25th Anniversary re-release was such a success that they're doing it again! In case you missed the two showings the weekend of October 23, then you can try again on November 6. If you're in Los Angeles, you can view it at any of the theaters listed below at 12:30pm.

LOS ANGELES, CA area
- AMC Burbank 16
- AMC Universal CityWalk 19
- AMC Puente Hills 20
- AMC Block 30
- AMC Downtown Disney 12
- AMC Covina 30
- AMC Tustin 14
- AMC Ontario Mills 30
- AMC Tyler 16
- AMC Marina Pacifica 12
- AMC Victoria Gardens 12
- AMC Norwalk 20
- AMC Rolling Hills 20

I loved watching in theaters on the 23rd. It was great to see it with fans who were just as in love with as I am, laughing at all the right parts. It was also great to see it uninterrupted and without distractions. The last 100 times I've seen it (ok, that may be exaggeration), I watched it on cable in my living room. Commercial breaks, roommates coming in and out, surfing the net, and who knows what else lead to a very disjointed viewing experience.

In other words, GO CHECK IT OUT! You'll thank me later.

Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Re-release

To celebrate 25 years since Marty McFly entered our lives, and our hearts, Back to the Future will be having two screenings this week at local AMCs.

Catch the film at:
October 23, 12:30pm
October 25, 7:00pm

It's a remastered print so it should be a fantastic viewing experience!

While Los Angeles doesn't have many AMC Theaters in the heart of the city, there are many just a quick drive away. For the full list of participating AMCs, visit the AMC website.

My Price is Right Experience

Part of being (f)unemployed, I have a lot of time on my hands. In LA, that means I can go to show tapings and spend hours waiting in line to get in. There are tapings all the time for shows like 2 and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, Jimmy Kimmel, and more. However, the only one I had any interest in going to was one where I could possibly win a BRAAAND NEWWWW CAAAAR!!

We attempted to get into the 12:15pm taping, but apparently that taping fills up by 8:30am. After being turned away the first time, we decided to try our luck the next day for the 4:30pm show. We arrived about 5 hours early and were among the last 10 people admitted. I didn't realize how dedicated Price is Right fans were, but many people had showed up the night before for even the afternoon taping! I think the earliest I heard was someone camping out starting at 11pm.

We were given a contestant number then continued to stand around and wait until they wrangled everyone together, in numerical order, to fill out a small notecard on why they were there today and what they would do if they won. We then got to take a green screen photo so it looks like we were part of the action. Then we sat around and waited some more, until we were finally briefly interviewed by the producers, the final step in the selection process.

I'm too cheap to pay the $20 for the final photo, so sorry about the watermark.
There was a bit of a delay because the episode they shot at 12:30 was the Halloween special filled with funny costumes and an entirely different color scheme on the set. They had to change all the set dressings, so we weren't herded in to the studio until 5pm. After hours and hours of waiting, with no phone or any other source of entertainment, we finally got to sit for the taping.

The taping itself was a blast! We weren't called, but it was so much fun to be a part of the audience and yell out our price suggestions. Watching it on TV has nothing on watching it live. During the "commercial breaks" or between setting up the different prizes, Drew Carey stayed on stage and just chatted with the audience. It was similar to stand up comedy, but much more conversational. And before we knew it, the show was done! It was a very fast process once we were done waiting.

I'd definitely recommend it to others, just be sure you're prepared for the long wait. KT and I made a huge mistake by not bringing a book or something to do in those hours before taping started. It's a great touristy thing to do if you're a fan of the show or just want a chance to win something. I'd also recommend you come in a group of 10 or more. They definitely want to pick contestants that have a cheering section at the ready.

My episode aired earlier this week and it was awesome to see it play out on screen. While neither of us were picked, a girl who sat in front of us so we got plenty of screen time from the audience. So surreal to see yourself on TV!

You can order tickets in advance for CBS's tapings of The Price is Right easily online, in person, or over the phone. Good luck to those who decide to attend a taping!

Glow was Lackluster

You know something's wrong when the highlight of your event is the food trucks.

Last night I went to the GLOW event at Santa Monica. It sounded cool and had a lot of press and buzz about it leading up to the event. I'm sure it was a huge success considering how busy the area was - full parking lots, slow traffic, and lots of foot traffic around all the exhibits.

However, the exhibits themselves were a disappointment. I don't know what I expected, but this did not live up to the hype. Many of the exhibits were just screens set up with an original film projected on it. The two I stuck around to watch seemed more like random images and moments, than anything cohesive or with meaning. One was a video of two men playing ball on the beach. The other was a video of clips of dogs projected on a Hot Dog on a Stick shack.

The best exhibit was Muscle Beach Glow - they had acrobats, tightrope walkers, and other stunt type performers dressed in white and neons so they popped under the blacklights they had set up. They had a DJ to liven up the performances, and glow in the dark facepaint so the kids could participate a little as well.

The highlight of the evening was the India Jones truck. I'd never been able to try it before since I never seemed to be able to catch it when it stop on the Westside. I got the butter chicken and pork vindaloo with basmati rice. This truck has been around for a while and I can see why; it was delicious! Just the right amount of spice for what I ordered. I will definitely be ordering from there again.

Overall, I had a fun time but it had little to do with the addition of the GLOW exhibits. The event just served as a reason to hang out with some friends on the beach with beautiful weather and great food. Did anyone else check out GLOW? Did it get better as it got later? I was there for a couple hours at the beginning, maybe many of the exhibits just needed more time to get into the groove.

Santa Monica is all aGLOW

Tomorrow marks the return of the Glow Santa Monica. It's a unique FREE event - glowing art on the Santa Monica beach! Starting at dusk you can walk with the sand between your toes, listen to the crashing waves, and be surrounded by glowing art and exhibits.
For a unique and unusual artistic experience, hit up Santa Monica on the night of September 25, where you will witness glowing, interactive exhibits of light and sound populating the beach, the pier and Palisades Park all night long.

Glow Santa Monica is a free event that lets you run around by the ocean in the middle of the night and check out original work by 25 local, national and international artists, commissioned just for this event, which is one of a kind in the world.

Starting at sunset and lasting until dawn, Glow Santa Monica is an all-night celebration of creativity thrown by the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Arts Fund, akin to the Nuit Blanche events thrown in European cities like Paris and Rome – but they don’t have the beach and the waters of the Pacific to reflect the lights, doubling the beauty and enhancing the experience.

Blood & Boobs Film Fest at the New Beverly

I just found out about this all too perfect film festival happening - Blood & Boobs Film Fest! I'm a huge fan of b-movies, over-the-top violence and nudity, and anything else that is so ridiculous, it's hilarious.

I'm definitely going to be checking out "Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers" and "Nude Nuns with Big Guns" on Sunday! It's too bad Sharktopus and the USC game vs. Washington State is on Saturday, otherwise I'd definitely be checking out "My Japanese Wife Next Door" Parts 1 and 2. Gamera Explained & Free Movies

Here’s another flip cam video of my friend explaining the cult classic, Gamera.

This was the first I’ve heard of the Asian beast, but it also just so happens to be part of a free screening series here in LA!

While you can see 80s and 90s classics at Westfield Century City and The Grove, only at the Natural History Museum/La Brea Tar Pits series can you see B-Movies that are scary, hilarious, and terrible all at once. Check below for the full summer schedule. For Gamera, stop by the Natural History Museum on August 15!

Movie Dates:
June 26: Encino Man: Page Museum at La Brea Tar Pits — Hancock Park Lawn
July 17: It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955): Natural History Museum — South Lawn
July 24: The Killer Shrews (1959): Natural History Museum — South Lawn
Aug 1: Gorilla at Large (1954): Natural History Museum — South Lawn
Aug 15: Gammera the Invincible (1966): Natural History Museum — South Lawn
Aug 29: Caveman (1981): Page Museum at La Brea Tar Pits — Hancock Park Lawn

I Got to “Party Down” with “Tig Has Friends”

This week I went with a few friends to The Largo to see the comedy show “Tig has Friends” with the cast of Party Down.

I just recently got into the show thanks to it being available on Netflix Watch Instantly. By the way, Netflix and Hulu may be the best inventions of the 21st Century.

The comedy show was a hilarious! I had never heard of Tig Notaro before, but apparently she was a regular on The Sarah Silverman Show as well as In The Motherhood (never heard of that show either). She opened up with a hilarious story about her and her frequent run-ins with 80s pop star Taylor Dane. Then the cast of Party Down came out to show their hidden talents. Megan and Adam did a terrible reading of an excerpt from a Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys. Martin Starr rapped with Common Rotation and then Megan and Martin did a great rendition of “Put it in my Mouth.”

They did a Q&A session and while the questions weren’t memorable, the cast found a way to make it hilarious. It was a great night and I would definitely be interested to see the show again. Tig does a monthly show at The Lagro called “Tig Has Friends.”

For more info on Tig, check out this article from LA Weekly: MAKE US LAUGH, FUNNY GIRL!

The show Party Down is a hilarious take on the struggling actors lifestyle. It follows the Party Down catering team at various “glamorous” Los Angeles parties while discussing auditions, whos-who, and trying to make it in the biz. While Entourage covers the industry from the agent and successful actor angle, this is a much more “everyman” type of story. Its hilariously scenarios and one-liners make it a great way to pass 30 minutes.

With seasons of only 13 episodes, this is one show you can easily catch up with during the slow television season of summer. As one of the nominees for the TCA Best Comedy Award, it’s definitely worth your time.

Kristen Bell is back this week, reprising her role as Uda from Valhalla Catering. Check out this preview:

Party Down airs on Starz (or find it on Netflix Watch Instantly!) every Friday at 10 pm EST/PST.

Living a Video Game: Paintballing

Last weekend I had the awesome experience of going paintballing, just outside LA. We had some discount coupons for a whole package for only $40, which covered gun rental, 2 rounds on each of the 6 courses, and 400 pellets. Plus, since we were a large group, we got to do every course on our own, eliminating the risks of getting destroyed by experts on the courses they are far more familiar with. It was a great deal and I wouldn't want to do paintballing any other way!

When we arrived, a few of us were seriously reconsidering doing it. We were surrounded by big men decked out in camouflage, wearing intense vests equipped with ammunition so they could reload quickly on the fields. They were war-ready and we were mere children by comparison. However, once we confirmed that it would be just us on the field at once, it was a lot more fun and a lot less scary.

Hollywood Sports Park, in Bellflower, has great fields to play on. Granted, I don't have any thing to compare it against, but the fields are based on movie sets! We played on "Lunar Wars," based off the set from Starship Troopers, "Korea" based off Apocalypse Now, and a few others that I don't remember what films they were inspired by. We ran through mazes of ancient ruins in "The Forbidden City," used hollowed out wrecked cars as cover, and were covered in paint by the end of it.

It was such a fun day, and a much healthier Saturday than my usual routine of going to the movies. We were at the park for about 5 hours and my arms and legs were sore for days afterwards from all the running, crouching, and lugging that heavy paintball gun around. If you get the chance to go paintballing, I definitely recommend it! It has this stigma of being painful and scary, but after the initial shock of getting hit it only stings for a few seconds. Plus, I'm sure the more you play, the better you get at avoiding the bullets.

The Venice (CA) Canals

This weekend was gorgeous! KT and I took advantage of the beautiful weather and went to explore Venice Beach and the Venice Canals. Despite being in LA since I was 4, I had never been to the canals. They were so beautiful and peaceful! It's only a matter of blocks, but its a whole world away from the Venice Boardwalk that thrives with personality and street performers.

There were cute ducks everywhere!

Strawberry Monster

I just got this lovely little cake from Cake House on Olympic Blvd. The cake was pretty delicious, but what makes me love it is that little strawberry monster on top. Isn't it cute?

Dine LA: Royal T Cafe

Earlier this week, I had the best cupcake of my life. And it wasn't at a bakery, or made by my very talented friends, it was at Royal T Cafe. As I mentioned earlier, Dine LA is a great deal where at certain restaurants you get a 3 course meal for a reasonable price.

The whole meal was great! We had an appetizer of Pan-fried Duck with baby spinach:

For the main course, we had Kobe beef cheeseburgers. They were so juicy and delicious. I particularly loved the gruyere cheese and cucumbers, something you don't normally get on a burger. I don't have pictures of the burgers because we were so hungry I forgot about it until about halfway through. woops!

And then came dessert. The most delicious, moist, soft, amazing cupcake I've ever had. In such an unlikely place! I got a chocolate raspberry cupcake:

Not only was the food great, but I really loved the atmosphere. It's very asian, with asian pop art everywhere, even with a section in front where you can buy asian knick-knacks and the art on display. The uniforms were cute, with a slight tinge of fetishism in there too - very Japanese! I didn't get a photo of the uniforms, but here's some of the pop art they had around:

Overall, a great little cafe! I will definitely be heading back, especially for the cupcakes!
