2010 Fall TV Wrap Up

This season of TV flew by! When I started the season, I had too many shows to keep up with. Luckily (but really unforetunately) my viewing habits thinned out due to waning quality and cancellations. Let's see how my 2010 Fall TV schedule shaked out in the end.

Mondays
Dancing With the Stars - While I wasn't a fan of the show going in, there were definitely some entertaining moments and I was rooting for Jennifer Grey early on. While I'm glad Bristol didn't win, it certainly kept things interesting to have her around. I enjoyed the season, but I don't think I'll be tuning in again unless I'm assigned it for Reality Wanted next season. I'll stick to So You Think You Can Dance and America's Best Dance Crew for talented and fantastic dance.
Chuck - While this definitely hasn't been the strongest season (veering too close to territory that Alias did much better), it's still one of my favorite shows on air. Each episode does a great job of balancing the comedy, the spy work, and the new relationship between Chuck and Sarah. While every season has felt like it could be their last, this season it's actually the anchor on their Monday night schedule. With NBC, you never know if it'll order more episodes or just cancel it at the end. Here's to hoping this show comes back for a 5th season!
How I Met Your Mother - I feel like this show needs to do what LOST did: pick an end date and plot out everything according to that timeline. I WANT TO MEET THE MOTHER ALREADY! There have been a few solid episodes (Blitzgiving, Subway Wars), which is more than I can say about last season.

Tuesday
Glee - What can I say? This is the most erratic, inconsistent show and yet I can't give it up. Once every episode or two there will be a scene, a moment, or a musical number that pulls me back in.


Wednesday
Modern Family - Last season, this show broke out to become my favorite show on TV. Consistently hilarious, rooted in character moments that have a heart at its core, this is a great family comedy. While this season has been solid, so far no single episodes have stuck out to me as much as last season (Fizbo, Run for your Wife).
Cougar Town - While Modern Family is in the shadow of it's excellent freshman season, Cougar Town has been improving week in and week out to the point where some weeks I find this show to be funnier and sharper than its lead in. Maybe my favorite half hour of television this season was the Cougar Town episode, Fooled Again: I Don't Like It, where Andy turns out to be Kaiser Sozy.
South Park - This show mainly stays on my list because my boyfriend is such a big fan, but I do find it funny and enjoy watching. This season's best contribution was the Snooki monster in It's a Jersey Thing. Truly a horrifying image.
Psych - While some grow tired of this show, I just loved this season the most. If you love this show, it rests solely on how much you enjoy Dule Hill and James Roday, and I can't get enough of their schtick. This season also finally brought Jules and Sean together and had the great Dual Spires episode. As a Twin Peaks fan, it was a fantastic hour of television. And even if you never saw Twin Peaks (like my boyfriend KT), you still enjoyed it.


Thursday
The Vampire Diaries - If you follow my blog, which I'm assuming you do since you're reading this, you already know how much I love this show. Never a dull moment, let alone a dull episode, this show keeps you guessing! The breakneck pace, the love triangles, and the growing mythology are all brought together to create this fantastic show that not enough people even give a chance. Just because it's vampires doesn't mean it's Twilight.
Nikita - A pleasant surprise this season, this is quickly becoming a new favorite. Definitely my favorite of the new series this fall, Nikita takes a story that has been told time and time again and still makes it interesting. I love Maggie Q and can't wait to see where it goes during the second half of its season.
The Big Bang Theory - While this season hasn't been great, it's still an entertaining half hour. With Amy becoming a regular character though, her quirky personality, and therefore the show,  could begin to grate really soon.
Bones - This season got off to a shaky start with the introduction of Hannah. I thought for sure that Booth and Brennan would finally, FINALLY, get together. But with a new roadblock, I was a little annoyed. However, I've grown to like Hannah as a character who's worthy of Booth. Plus, the fall finale The Doctor in the Photo was one of the best episodes of the series. Here's hoping this is the beginning of an upswing for the season!

Sunday
Mad Men - This season was an exquisite look at the beautiful disaster that became of Don Draper after his split with Betty. He was trying to figure out who he was and who he wanted to be. For a show that some people say "nothing happens" so much happened this season between Don, Peggy, Sally, and Joan. Not to mention the business as they grew as a startup and then faced the challenge of losing their biggest client. I can't wait to see where things are when we go back to the 60s next summer.
The Walking Dead - The biggest hit for AMC didn't involve drugs or drinking, just people trying to survive. While this has been compared to LOST, I don't see that as a bad thing at all. I want to care about characters! I want their struggle to become personal. If it didn't, this show would be just like FlashForward or The Event, aka boring and a flop. It'll be interesting to see what the show looks like when it returns Halloween 2011. We'll have to see how the whole writers' room situation shakes out.


Goners: 
These are all the shows that I either stopped watching or that were cancelled this season. Either way, they didn't make the cut and I won't be tuning in again. Well, most likely. Never say never in the world of TV!
Running Wilde - Cancelled, but all around just not funny. Definitely didn't live up to the expecations that were set for a show by Mitch Hurwitz and starring Will Arnett.
America's Next Top Model - This season was just so boring compared to previous ones. I guess the girls were too nice? It also felt pretty obvious who was going to win from like the 3rd week, so where's the fun in watching a competition show when there's no real competition? 
No Ordinary Family - I was so excited for this show, but it just couldn't hold my interest. The first 3 episodes all felt the same and they didn't find the right balance between the super powers and the responsibility that goes with that, and the family dynamic. I hear it hit a better stride in the latest 3 episodes, so maybe I'll give it another shot. 
Sh%t My Dad Says - Just not funny, despite my love for The Shat and my appreciation for the twitter feed it was based on. 
Family Guy - Last season was so bad, I have just given up on this show. 
Caprica - I loved it before it went on hiatus, but after it's return they decided to focus more on the religious aspect. I preferred the AI and New Caprica angles, so my interest waned. Shortly after, it was cancelled. I'll definitely be giving the other BSG off shoot a shot once that airs, though. I'm not done with this universe. 
Undercovers - Who would have thought that a spy show by JJ Abrahms would be so boring? I loved the idea and really wanted it to succeed, but the characters were lacking and the missions just didn't convey the urgency or excitement as they should. Something wasn't clicking so I dropped it and it was cancelled.

Happy 90210 Day!

I was going to ignore the "holiday" all together since I never watched the original show all that much, but I came across an article that was too good to keep to myself!

Flavorwire examined 90210 and how Mad Men is it's modern, yet retro, take on similar characters. My favorite is the blurb about Pete Campbell and David Silver:

2010 Emmy Predictions: Drama Categories

Tomorrow is the Emmy's! And while I don't think they get the winners right nearly as often as The Oscars and The Television Critics Association Awards, they do pack a lot of clout when it comes to public perception.

This could be the year that many Emmy favorites and repeat winners will be unseated. With so many new shows and actors in the running, it is almost anyone's game! I'm hoping the Emmy's will reward talent over big names like Tony Shaloub and Julianna Marguiles. They are all very talented, but it's time to get some fresh blood in the mix!

The Good Wife

True Blood finally gets some award recognition! With Lost and True Blood in contention, my genre loving heart is content. I'm glad some fantasy/sci-fi shows are getting finally get recognized for their accomplishments instead of instantly being regulated to second class work. If only they would have recognized so many other shows that were just as qualified (Buffy, Battlestar Galactica, etc.)

While Mad Men has won for the previous two years, Dexter just wrapped it's best season yet. With critical buzz and fan appeal, this could be their year. Also, with the John Lithgow a strong contender to win, Dexter buzz has been at a fever pitch this awards season. While I love True Blood, I just don't think it will take the category. It really is just an honor that they're nominated. LOST also has a strong chance since it has yet to win the big award, despite the mass appeal and it's lasting effects on scripted broadcast television. With this nomination for its last year, it could win as a statement to it strong work for the past six seasons, similar to Lord of the Rings' Best Picture win at the Oscars in 2004.

But in the end, I say that Mad Men is still going to take it home. While I would love for the Emmy's to shake things up, this is one where I think the incumbent is still the champion. If Mad Men doesn't take it home, Dexter would be the front runner.

This is a tough category to pick a clear winner. There are the award veterans of Julianna Margulies and Glenn Close, along with popular new nominees. However, with a strong performance on a series centered entirely around her character, Juliana Marguiles will take the statue home. I wish Connie Britton would win, but while Friday Night Lights is a critical darling, no one is watching.

Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series

Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights)
Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
Hugh Laurie (House M.D.)
Michael C. Hall (Dexter)
Matthew Fox (Lost)

Sad to say it, but you can pretty much count Hugh Laurie, Matthew Fox, and Kyle Chandler out of this fight. Again, it was such a pleasant surprise that Kyle Chandler was even nominated. Jon Hamm and Bryan Cranston are strong contenders, with fantastic AMC shows centered around their performance, but Dexter had such a great season that this is his year. While having its strongest season yet, Michael C. Hall upped his performance to go toe-to-toe with John Lithgow's disturbing performance as the Trinity Killer. And I hate to think of it this way, but his recent battle with cancer probably garnered him a few sympathy votes.

I fear that the two LOST nominees will end up splitting the vote, which would be a shame since this was Terry O' Quinn's finest season. He did a fantastic job of playing both roles of The Man in Black and alt-verse Locke.  I don't watch Damages and Breaking Bad (I'll be fixing that eventually, I swear), but have heard strong buzz about both Martin Short and Aaron Paul. In the end, I think the Emmy will go to the more recognizable name, Martin Short, since that's how things usually turn out.

My biggest girl crush at the moment is Christina Hendricks. She's got such a beautiful face, an amazing body that is making curves sexy again, and is a solid actress to boot. However, I don't think she'll be winning tomorrow. It's hard to predict this one since the double nominations for The Good Wife and Mad Men may split votes, but buzz seems to be in Christine Baranski's favor. As The TV Addict said, "the amount of levity and romance she brought to her scenes with special guest star Gary Cole, turn[ed] what very easily could have been a one-note character into one character to remember."

Mad Men’s Fresh Start

Season 4 of Mad Men starts on July 25th and it will be a whole new ballgame for the returning characters.

Last season we saw many of the characters on the brink of starting anew: Betty off to California and our favorite Ad Men created Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.

What summer shows will you be watching? I'm definitely watching Mad Men and Psych, but will also be checking out The Gates and Pretty Little Liars. The show I've been eagerly anticipating is an old one that I've missed so much - Futurama! My favorite of the cartoons-for-adults genre (The Simpsons, Family Guy, Venture Bros., etc) is back after being prematurely canceled and then briefly resurrected for TV movies. Now it's back to form with a series order from Comedy Central and hopefully can live up to the standard it set the first time around.

What summer shows will you be watching? Or do you chose to spend your summers catching up on good TV you missed the first time around (Six Feet Under, The Wire, Sopranos, etc)?

Golden Globe Winners

Overall, the show was solid, even though some of Gervais's jokes didn't have the timing that he needed. However, I am pleased with how most of the awards were handed out. For my predictions, check out my blog post from earlier today.

The big surprise for me is Avatar's win for Best Picture. It seems only James Cameron can have both a box office smash and an award winner. It makes me wonder if some of the bigger movies were nominated/won in a small way to boost ratings for these ratings starved shows.

Up in the Air was nominated for the most awards, but ended up only taking home Best Screenplay, which even they didn't think they deserved and were still waiting to hear Quentin's name to correct the error. I really thought Quentin was going to win it, and Up in the Air to be shut out. I was not far off.

I'm happily surprised I was wrong about Glee! I thought Modern Family, that critical darling, would be the one to take down 30 Rock and win the globe. While Glee is one of my favorite shows this year, it has been uneven. The baby storylines alone were huge detractors overall. But, Glee won out in the end and I'm glad this show is getting awards and ratings to keep it around! Let's just hope it doesn't jump the shark the way Ryan Murphy's other show (Nip/Tuck) has.

Tonight are the Golden Globes, the most fun of the award shows. I'm looking forward to Ricky Gervais's hosting skills, he's always pretty quick-witted and hilarious. He veers towards the "almost-too-awkward-to-be-funny" humor, but most of the time it toes the line just right. Below are my Golden Globe predictions in bold.

"Up in the Air" may have the most nominations, but I don't think it's going to win the most. I think "Inglorious Basterds" could take the most home - Best Screenplay, Best Supporting, and I even think it has a shot at Best Picture. It's just such a well done movie, and impressive that it seamlessly weaves through 3 languages. Who do you guys think will be taking home the awards?

Emmy Sunday! Here are my predictions of who's taking home the statue. Who I think will win is bolded. Who I want to win is italicized. If those match, then they get the double treatment!

I have recently become obsessed with Mad Men. It's dramatic and engaging. It completely pulls me into this 1960s world, but also highlights that while some things have changed, some things have glaringly remained the same.

Even though this past season of How I Met Your Mother was my least favorite of their 4, I still think it should win out. It's a great sitcom that has been so underrated until this past year. '30 Rock' has had it's time to shine, and is still a laugh a minute show, but HIMYM is must watch for me while '30 rock' is regulated to DVR/Hulu viewing.

She's there for the contestants when they need some encouraging words after a brutal judging, moves the show along after the judges digress too much, and knows how to get the show moving after a particularly pervy comment from Nigel. I hope she can get a nomination next year, especially now that SYTYCD has 2 seasons within the eligible period.
