Music Monday: No One Believes Me by Kid Cudi (for the FRIGHT NIGHT soundtrack)

FRIGHT NIGHT opens this Friday and if you're in to truly villainous vampires instead of the soft, romantic ones from TWILIGHT, this flick is right up your alley. For the film's soundtrack, Kid Cudi cut this moody track and filmed a great companion video to the film. Check out the video after the break and stay tuned for my film review for GeekTyrant!

Asylum Home Entertainment has given us the exclusive trailer premiere for "Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus," and if you thought a shark taking a bite out of the Golden Gate Bridge was crazy, wait until you get a load of what two mutant creatures can do. Yup, that's a giant croc below ravaging a convention center. And, yup, that's Jaleel White, a.k.a. Steve Urkel all grown up, battling him in the trailer. 

STEVE URKEL, guys! I wonder if he'll show up as the suave, together Stefan Urquelle. Or he could be the reason these creatures even exist and utter the famous line, "Did I do that?"

I'm excited to see this! I don't know if/when it'll be airing on SyFy, but the DVD comes out on December 21. Mark your calendars, it's gonna awesome!

100 Horror Movies Spoiled in Under 6 Minutes

The Fine Brothers are at it again! In honor of the holiday, they're spoiling 100 major halloween movies in less than 6 minutes. It's hilarious, but the title says it all. Don't watch if you want to watch horror classics as a blank slate.



They've done a ton of these "spoiled" videos already, from Oscars to 2009 movies and even reality TV! You can check out the spoiled playlist on YouTube.

Netflix Watch Instant: Earth Girls Are Easy

This is one of the most underrated 80s comedies. Starring Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Damon Wayons, and Jim Carrey, it follows Geena Davis as 3 aliens land in her pool. Being a manicurist and having a best friend in hair (Julie Brown), she quickly gives the three aliens a makeover so they blend in to the sunny San Fernando Valley scene. They quickly get into various hijinks and romantic entanglements and when Geena Davis' cheating fiance wants to get back together she has to chose between him or the handsome alien that just fell into her lap.

The film is just as ridiculous as it sounds and that's what makes it SO FUN. There are even some musical numbers thrown in. It's not a musical, but it feels like it wanted to be but chickened out about halfway through. The best musical number definitely belongs to Julie Brown's "Cause I'm a Blonde." I can't find an embeddable version, but to get a feel for the film you need to watch it.

If you like absurd comedies that are aware of just how silly they are, then you should definitely check this out on Netflix.

Netflix Watch Instant: Halloween Edition

October is the time for horror and thrills! Netflix has a slew of films available to watch instantly to get you into the Halloween mood. Below are a few of my recommendations, to help you sift through all the films that are available.

Creature Features
Mega Piranha - The SyFy Original movie stars 80s teen pop star Tiffany as a genetic scientist. The government tried to help fight hunger in South America by genetically modifying fish to grow extraordinarily large. Of course, this brilliant plan backfires when the local piranha population starts to grow and feed and attack the nearby river communities. They become so large they can jump onto land, destroying cars, hotels, and everyone and thing in their path! How can Tiffany even begin to stop them?

The Fly - A star making turn for Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, a scientist's experiment of teleportation goes awry when a simply fly gets caught in the pod with him. Slowly, he and the fly's genetics start to merge and we're witness to the horrifying transformation.


Them! - From the awesome B-movie era of the 50s, this is a cult classic. When a bomb test nearby creates giant, mutant ants the community is caught unawares. The bugs they exterminated for so long are out for revenge! A team of scientists try to stop "Them!" - will they be able to save the town? This is one of the most influential horrof films, brilliantly capturing the fears of the nation as the first Atomic Bomb was being built. 

Horror Comedy
The Burbs - Starring Tom Hanks and Cory Feldman, this is one of my favorite 80s movies. When secretive new neighbors move in next door, suburbanite Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) and his friends let their paranoia get the best of them as they start to suspect the newcomers of evildoings and commence an investigation. This does an excellent job of blending the suspense with the laughs. It's a lighthearted choice for those that can't quite handle the scares of other films on this list.

Killer Klownz from Outer Space - From Netflix: An alien band of killer clowns descends from the cosmos to harvest scores of small-town victims, cocooning their prey in cotton candy to eat later. With the extraterrestrials disguised as simple circus workers, the authorities don't suspect a thing. But the joke is on the clowns when two streetwise teens, armed with an ice cream truck, battle to save their friends in this cult favorite.


Zombieland - Probably the most popular and newest film on my list, I loved its blend of humor and action. The innovative way of teaching the audience the rules of survival, the fantastic opening credits, and Woody Harrelson's performance all make it must-see. I hope the sequel gets moving because I definitely want to spend more time in this world with Columbus, Tallahassee, and Wichita.


Don't Go to Sleep

A Nightmare on Elm Street - While the remake made a fair amount of money, it doesn't come anywhere close to the original. Skip the new one and go straight to the source. From Netflix: Years after being burned alive by a mob of angry parents, child murderer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) returns to haunt the dreams -- and reality -- of local teenagers in Wes Craven's spine-chilling slasher classic. As the town's teens begin dropping like flies, Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) and her boyfriend, Glen (Johnny Depp, in his big-screen debut), devise a plan to lure the monster out of the realm of nightmares and into the real world.

CandyMan - From Netflix: While researching urban myths, grad student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) learns about the Candyman (Tony Todd), a hook-handed creature who's said to haunt a Chicago housing project. In this creepy film based on a Clive Barker story, the Candyman is made flesh by other people's belief in him. Not surprisingly, Lyle manages to summon him. Soon, the Candyman has committed a series of murders, and the cops are holding Lyle responsible.

Inception: Time Traveled Trailer

This fan-made trailer answers the question of what the Inception trailer would have looked like if it had been released in the 50s. Maybe the iconic Hitchcock directed it, maybe it would have starred Jimmy Stewart. This is the closest we'll come to knowing.

Blood & Boobs Film Fest at the New Beverly

I just found out about this all too perfect film festival happening - Blood & Boobs Film Fest! I'm a huge fan of b-movies, over-the-top violence and nudity, and anything else that is so ridiculous, it's hilarious.

I'm definitely going to be checking out "Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers" and "Nude Nuns with Big Guns" on Sunday! It's too bad Sharktopus and the USC game vs. Washington State is on Saturday, otherwise I'd definitely be checking out "My Japanese Wife Next Door" Parts 1 and 2. I've never heard of it before, but the fact that it fits under the theme TOTAL F*#KING JAPANESE INSANITY has me completely intrigued.

SyFy Original Movie: Mandrake

Tomorrow is the return of SyFy Original Movies! Above is a preview clip from the new movie, Mandrake. While the clip starts off slow, the last few seconds totally make up for it. Tune in Saturday at 9pm EST/PST.

I know these are not the best quality, but they truly are  my generation's B-movies. While the drive-ins and theaters of yesteryear had their double features, we have big blockbusters, art house fare, and award winners without much falling outside these labels. SyFy's Original Movies fill the void as best they can with cheesy horror, scifi monster mash, and creature features on low low budgets. We need these types of films. You need bad films to recognize and appreciate the good. You need bad films to learn from. And you need bad films just to satisfy certain tastes. Certain bad films are so bad they're good - you enjoy and revel in the poor acting, lackluster storylines, and flat characters. Without bad films, there would be no Mystery Science Theater 3000! And I don't know if I would want to live in a world where that didn't exist.

Netflix Watch Instant: Black Dynamite

Netflix is becoming the "best bang for your buck" utility in my house. With 3 non-traditionally employed individuals, we have a lot of down time at home and while day time TV is enjoyable to some, I've decided to use my time to watch some of the quality programming available on Netflix Watch Instant. I'll try to make this regular column, since I plan on watching a good amount in the coming months.

So for the first installment, I watched Black Dynamite and had an absolute blast. Netflix describes it as follows:

Black Dynamite (Michael Jai White) is the only one strong enough and brave enough to take on the baddies who murdered his brother. What's the former CIA agent to do? Expose a conspiracy that leads straight to the White House. Providing plenty of hilarity and sexy, slick action, Scott Sanders directs this homage to classic 1970s blaxploitation flicks. Salli Richardson-Whitfield and Arsenio Hall also star.

I haven't seen many blaxploitation flicks, but based off those I have seen this was a great throwback that played with the norms of the genre. While having a message about black power, it doesn't take the serious road of slavery or oppression, but rather a hilarious off-the-wall take on alcohol taking away one of the powers the black male community. While it didn't have a smug tone that some postmodern films take, it definitely knew when to wink.

They did a fantastic job of capturing the look and feel of 1970s cinema, even casting people that the average movie-going public wouldn't recognize from previous work. There was only one cast member that I knew from before the film, and her appearance was slightly jarring. Before she showed up, I could have very well been watching an unknown film from the 70s.

At just under an hour and half, it's a great way to avoid the waning summer heat.

Machete vs. Going The Distance: Which Will You See?

Two very different movies are out this weekend, appealing to entirely different demographics and tastes. Watch the trailers below and let me know which one you're going to check out this weekend!

Machete

With big name talent like Steven Seagal and Robert Di Niro, this throw back to the days of blacksploitation and b-movie action flicks has a higher pedigree than one would expect. Filled with guns, blood, and a healthy helping of sexy ladies barely clothed this is sure to play well to those who enjoyed The Expendables and Piranha 3D.


Going the Distance

While this may seem like an ordinary romantic-comedy (rom-com), the fact that Charlie Day and Jason Sudekis are supporting characters make me thing this will put the Comedy back in that equation more than previous films in this genre. Justin Long and Drew Barrymore may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I feel like this type of love story is becoming more and more common in our technology infused world. I know many people, myself included, that have done the long distance relationship thing with the help of skype and the overall connectedness that the internet and telephone allow. Never before would so many long distance couples be able to thrive like we can today. 

I'm going to try to catch both at some point. Which one will you be seeing? Or will you use this long weekend to catch some great all-day marathons on cable instead? 

Gamera Explained & Free Movies

This was the first I’ve heard of the Asian beast, but it also just so happens to be part of a free screening series here in LA!

While you can see 80s and 90s classics at Westfield Century City and The Grove, only at the Natural History Museum/La Brea Tar Pits series can you see B-Movies that are scary, hilarious, and terrible all at once.
